The Philadelphia International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and among the fastest growing in the United States. The previous PHL website, however, was several years old. The look-and-feel was dated and lacked an intuitive design. Mobile usage increased but the non-responsive site led to slow download times for travelers.

The Tactile Group completely redesigned the site with a mobile-first UX approach, providing travelers immediate flight, parking, and TSA information.

DESIGN

Tactile facilitated an extensive visual taste investigation involving key stakeholders that included surveys, interviews, and in-person design sessions. Using those results, main features were realigned, a streamlined site map was developed, and accompanying wireframes built. The new design was delivered as a workable prototype, allowing the client a hands-on experience for testing the site’s features while the backend code was developed.

The new design features vibrant photos and videos spotlighting the airport and Philly life. The navigation is smooth, simple, and intuitive.

TECHNOLOGY

The airport’s new site is built in Drupal—an open-source content management platform that allows PHL staff to quickly and confidently provide updates through easy, secure templates. Additionally, Tactile, along with Windows Management Experts, a sub-contracting partner specializing in Windows management, supervised the site’s migration to the Microsoft Azure cloud hosting platform.

The site links to three external APIs, two of which are continually updated live feeds. Tactile worked with the client and their City partners to ensure smooth and secure connectivity for these highly-visible features.

OUTCOME

Tactile built and launched the new airport  website in July 2019. The site has received acclaim for its look and ease of use.  PHL.org continues to be maintained and supported by Tactile.

I am so pleased that our website now captures the surprise and delight we strive to achieve in the passenger experience.
